Kumbakonam Kadappa


one more side for the morning breakfast side dish. Goes well with idly, dosa, uthappam, & idiyappam.

Ingredients

  • Moong Dal - 3/4cup
  • Garlic cloves - 5 to 6 cloves
  • Funnel seeds - 1tbsp
  • Cashew nuts - 4 to5 nos
  • Green chilies - 2 plus 2nos
  • Shredded coconut - 1/2cup
  • Cloves - 2nos
  • Cinnamon stick - 2inch piece
  • Bay leaves - 1no
  • Onion - 2 medium sizes(cut into big chunks)
  • Potato - 2medium size(cut into big chunks)
  • Tomato - 1large size
  • Cilantro leaves - few strings(chopped)
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil as needed
Instructions
  • Grind the shredded coconut with fennel seeds, cashew nuts, and 2 green chilies. keep it aside.
  • Boil the moong dal with the garlic cloves in a pressure cooker till 2 to 3 whistles.
  • Heat oil in a kadhai and splutter 2 green chilies, cloves, cinnamon stick, and bay leaves.
  • Add the chunky chopped onions and potatoes and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Then, add the chopped tomatoes and cook till the tomatoes become soften.
  • Add 3/4th cup water and cook until the potatoes are softened.
  • Then, add the cooked moong dal with the potato gravy and Cook for 4 to 5 minutes.
  • Then add the grounded paste again cook for 5 minutes. Add chopped cilantro leaves. 
  • Serve hot with idli, dosa, paratha, naan, rice. 

Cooking Tips
  • You can add any kind of vegetables to the gravy.
  • Green chilies are the only ingredient for spicy. You can more according to your spice level or can add a tablespoon of chili powder if you are a spice lover.
